Working the Slouch and Chunk

November 12, 2013

One autumn morning several years ago, I stepped outside my Alphabet City apartment to grab coffee with my boyfriend at the time. He was waiting for me downstairs and upon seeing me told me that I looked like a lumpy pillowcase. I was wearing an oversize chunky sweater and drop-crotch harem pants, and though I was extremely comfortable — and why shouldn’t I be?! We were just going to get coffee! — I glanced down and realized he had a point. It looked as though I’d robbed the local coffee shop and stuffed multiple loafs of poundcake around my middle section. The only area of me that was slightly defined was my ankles since the drop-crotch pants tapered around there. I shrugged off his observation — again, we were just grabbing coffee (and poundcake?) — but that was the end of pairing tent pieces together.

I’ve more or less graduated from my days of harem pants (I say more or less because I have a feeling they’ll come back), but oversize chunky sweaters remain a crucial part of my fall and winter uniform. There are the obvious benefits of wearing bulky sweaters — warmth, the concealing of muffin tops and stolen poundcakes, did I say warmth? — but I’ve also discovered that, after failing miserably with harem pants, when styled with something a little more body skimming on the bottom (i.e. skinny jeans, flared denim, mini and/or pencil skirts) they can actually be quite leg-slimming. So, with Thanksgiving a little over two weeks away and your inevitable debacle of, “What can I wear that’s flattering but still allows me to stuff as much turkey, stuffing, and pie into my person without bursting a seam?” allow me to recommend a slouchy sweater paired with something slightly more dressy than the cargo jeans I’m wearing here. Or just keep something like this close by for next day tummy coverage as you will most likely still be full from the previous day’s gorging. Or is that just me?

Dear Turkey, Thank You

There are a number of things I am truly thankful for: my family, my friends, good health, Finn, and my closet. But I am also deeply thankful for the turkey currently getting crisper by the minute on the grill outside.

It is because of this giant bird that my family and friends get together each year and stuff themselves to the brim (it was only two years ago that I felt comfortable enough with those around me to unzip my skirt at the table mid-meal). And so, today I dedicate my biggest of thanks to the turkey who unwillingly sacrificed her life to bring 12 wonderful people to our Thanksgiving table this year.

I guess I should probably tell her I’m sorry, too.

The week before holidays are always tricky, especially when the holiday is Thanksgiving and all I can think about is what skirt or pants have enough stretch in them to allot for the ridiculous amount of eating I plan on doing.

But when my mind wasn’t devising strategies on how to beat both of my brothers to the stuffing this year, I had the opportunity to go to some seriously incredible events including Glamour‘s Women of the Year Awards, which honored everyone including J.Crew’s Jenna Lyons, Oscar-winning documentary director Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, 21st century writing genius Lena Dunham, photographer Annie Leibovitz, and five Gold-Medal Olympians.

Never in my life have I felt more inspired and optimistic while at the same time feeling totally worthless. For as I sat there awestruck by Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy’s accomplishments and perseverance to save Pakistani women from their husbands who throw acid on their faces, I couldn’t help but wonder what the hell I’m doing writing about outfits and my need to eat stuffing?

I started this blog three years ago with the intentions of providing people with just a little moment of joy or mindlessness amidst a busy day, but now that I’m older I’m wondering if it isn’t time to start taking this blog in a different direction that reflects more on the inner workings of my mind within a sartorial bubble.

I’m really just thinking out loud here, but some of the best responses I get from you all is when I share things that are a bit more personal, like my relationship with Spanx and my frustration with balloon-wear.

Is that something you would be interested in seeing more of on here? I’d really love to know.

So, while you’re mulling that around in your noggin, peep some of this week’s happenings including my new pair of lace cat ears!

You all knew it was only a matter of time before I got myself a pair

{ New roommate for the next month }

Man, I love short weeks! I’m so excited for these next few days of nothing but the relaxation station. I’m not one for obnoxious crowds so I’ll be skipping the whole Black Friday shopping frenzy, but that doesn’t mean I won’t be hittin’ up some sales on the handy, dandy worldwide web.

This weekend I have absolutely nothing on the agenda (except for tickets to THE CURE! on Sunday), and it feels great. I plan on lounging around with my family, eating leftovers, and obnoxiously singing Christmas carols because as far as I’m concerned, now that Thanksgiving is over, that’s officially OK now.

Joy to the world! Ta tum tum tum.

Here’s a little peep at this past week.

{ Finally got a neon Cambridge Satchel thanks to my amazing friend Sev! }

{ A quick shopping trip around Soho }

{ Tickets to The Cure for this Sunday! }

{ Turkey time! }

You thought I forgot didn’t you! I didn’t! Congratulations to JillyL, the winner of the Stella & Dot clutch giveaway! Please email me with your shipping info.

More giveaways are just around the corner though so STAY TUNED!

I’ve been in desperate need of a few days off for awhile now so I’m thrilled to have a short week this week. Aside from dressing up for Thanksgiving, I plan on spending the rest of the week/weekend in comfy clothes while hanging with my family.

This outfit is another oldie but definitely a goodie because it may not look like it but everything I’m wearing is about as comfortable as a pair of soft, stretchy pajamas; which, let’s face it, is probably going to be the only comfortable thing after a giant Thanksgiving meal.
