SIDEWALK ▲ CAFES

October 13, 2011

I don’t know why but something about this outfit makes me think of traveling to Europe with friends and eating/drinking at sidewalk cafes. I think it’s because all of the pieces by American Living are versatile and comfortable (crucial when packing) and yet a pop of raspberry red lips, a bright flower and a classic pair of heels make them slightly more sophisticated.

One of my favorite things about traveling with friends is the process of getting ready for a night out on the town. Everyone’s rummaging in each other’s suitcases, the frequent question is “does this look ok?” and by the end of an hour spent getting ready, everyone is wearing each others clothes and usually far dressier than they need to be.

Although I don’t have any travel plans in the near future, I’m definitely making a mental note of this outfit for the next time I jet off to a fun place with friends.

We all know how much I love bags, so naturally my ears perked up when I found out that my old friend Victoria Horning was designing her very own line of handbags. Little did I know that her collection would quickly become my obsession du jour!

I met up with Victoria last week at Abdingdon Sq. Park in the West Village to catch-up and take a gander at her designs that I’d been lusting after on the internet for months and months. To say that I drooled over her collection would be an understatement. I was practically slobbering (not literal slobber FYI) over these bags, blown away by their unique shapes, impeccable construction, and beautiful quality. Each piece in her growing collection is named after one of her favorite streets in Paris, the source of inspiration for her line, and feature exotic skins and leathers that she finds in local NYC factories in the garment district. I loved hearing about how she goes about designing and producing these bags and the plans she has on developing her line further, eventually moving into shoe design as well.

While still in the beginning stages of making a name for herself in the fashion industry, I can say with the greatest amount of confidence that Victoria Horning is the next big thing. Her collection is the perfect combination of sophisticated simplicity and downtown edge and is as seasonless as it is timeless. You can currently buy her bags at NYC’s Curve Boutique in the West Village or by special order on her website. And be sure to follow her on twitter as well!

Now onto deciding which one I’m going to buy!

Last night I went to see Woody Allen’s new movie Midnight in Paris with my friend Sevan and mon dieu! I loved it! It’s not often that I walk out of a movie smiling and feeling light on my feet but I felt so happy afterward that I walked 30 blocks home in these 4 1/2 inch wedges without getting so much as a foot cramp or blister. Watching a movie so focused around the beauty and magic of a city not only made me fall in love with Paris all over again but it made me notice and appreciate the beauty of New York, the city I choose to live in day in and day out (which would thus explain why I decided to walk home). Sometimes I get so caught up in my life with all its ups and downs that I forget to take a moment and acknowledge where I am and how lucky I am to be here.

On a more fashion-focused note, I bought this Pepto Bismol pink sweater yesterday at J.Crew and was surprised by how much I enjoyed wearing such a feminine color! Usually pink makes me feel overly girly and cheesy but the touch of neon mixed with the sleek silhouette made me feel chic and sophisticated which I decided to juxtapose by wearing a silly kitty ring that may be the cutest thing I own.

Now, go see Midnight in Paris!

Defining Moments

Someone recently asked me to describe my personal style and I think I looked at them with a blank expression for about half a minute before mumbling out some long description that made me sound like a pretentious poop. Truth be told I don’t think I really have a style that can be categorized, I’m really a day-t0-day type of person. However, I’ve been putting a lot more thought into it and I’d like to think that my style is a melting pot of all the places that I love in the world - a little California girl, a little Parisian bourgeois, a little edgy New Yorker…no? Or perhaps a mix of the eras that I love - 1920s flapper meets 1940s sophistication meets 1960s hippie meets 1980s punk? Golly gosh I just don’t know. See how jumbled I am about this!?

In an effort to “define my style” I’ve pulled together some images that inspire my outfits on a day-to-day basis.

How would you define your style?

Every month I subconsciously make a list of things that I’m inspired by, lusting after and falling for. Many of these doodads are featured in at least one of my weekly blog posts, but I thought that as this month is coming to an end I’d feature a group of my current obsessions in one giant post:

1. Navaho Printed Bags - this bag (via) has to be one of the best vintage finds I’ve ever seen. I love the intricate stitching and faded colors which are all complimented by the luscious foxtail.

2. Long Blonde Hair - Every time I’ve grown my hair out to a length that I’m finally happy with, I go the hairdresser and they butcher it all off. After explaining to my latest hairdresser that I only wanted two inches snipped off, I ended up walking out of the salon with seven inches of my long blonde hair hacked off. I know, I know, hair always grows back, but until I get it back to the length that I’m most content with I cannot help but have serious hair envy of girls with locks that fall so beautifully down their backs.

3. No. 6 Clog Boots - There will always be those few items that I sway back and forth on whether or not I should buy. For the past few months I have been adding the No. 6 clog boots (here) to my online shopping carts but have never mustered up the courage to buy them. Well, the time has come - whether my bank account likes it or not, I’m going to purchase these No. 6 boots. I have no doubts that I will wear them practically everyday and that they’ll transition perfectly throughout each season.

4. Ashley Smith - Ashley Smith is quickly becoming one of my new favorite models. I love her gap-toothed smile, “womanly” figure, and the fact that she works out at the same gym as me.

5. Jean-Charles de Castelbajac S/S 2011 Collection - I love the bright, bold colors of this collection and that it was inspired by Le Petit Prince, travel and adventures. These are two of my favorite looks from the runway:

6. Bug Jewelry - I already wear a glow-in-the-dark bug bracelet everyday (see here), but I can’t seem to get enough of these crawly little creatures as jewelry pieces.

Right via Asos - Left via Bottega Veneta

7. Lindsey Thornburg - It’s been over six months since I blogged about Lindsey Thornburg (see here) and I still can’t get her cozy cloaks out of my mind. If only they were just a wee bit cheaper and I’d be wearing one right now.

What are you currently falling for?
