Makeup that’s not only shvitz proof, but also shvitz complimentary is probably as important as a strong deodorant during the summer. And while I enjoy Heidi Klum’s theory that, “More is more,” something tells me she’s blessed with Central Air and the lack of a sweat gene because let me tell you, Heidi, and the rest of you, when it comes to summertime in the city, less is more.

Along with my desire to walk around naked while clutching a portable air conditioner, I also want makeup that won’t end up dribbling down my face the second I step outside. I made a rookie mistake continuing my normal beauty routine for my first few summers in New York City, but I’ve learned my lesson and have adopted a new regime that’s simple, flattering, and sweat resistant.

The first thing I apply is bareMinerals Original Foundation with SPF 15 to my T-Bone Steak, I mean T-Zone. It not only evens out my skin tone, but absorbs the inevitable shine that accumulates throughout the day.

After that, pending I have a tan, I use Victoria’s Secret Illuminating Face Powder in Next to Nude on my cheekbones. This adds a hint of pinky bronze to my skin as well as a touch of glimmer that gives that much-desired sun kissed look. Careful not too add too much or else you’ll look like Mariah Carey on the cover of her movie Glitter. Or a Real Housewife. Or a My Little Pony. Really just anything fake. Well, except My Little Ponies because those are real. Ok, I’m done.

As you likely read last week, I’ve recently become a fan of thick, bushy eyebrows. Using Anastasia’s Brow Powder Duo, I slightly darken my eyebrows which surprisingly brings out the rest of the features on my face. The powder also lasts throughout a sweaty day, which is more than I can say for my eyeliner, even after applying my beloved goop.

I then apply a generous amount of Kiehl’s Lip Balm, not necessarily because it hydrates my lips (it doesn’t really do it for me), but because I’ve noticed that its sunblock works better than the other sun proof lip balms I’ve tried. Then, if I’m feeling ambitious, I’ll add a swipe of CoverGirl Liplicks Smoochies Lip Balm (who comes up with these names?) in #Text Me (no seriously, who comes up with these names?). A light application is the perfect amount of raspberry pink, while a couple of swipes gives my smackers a hue similar to the one I might get from eating too many cherries.

I finish off my look by brushing my lashes with the one and only mascara every girl should own, DiorShow Waterproof Mascara. The Waterproof is really code for Sweatproof, and no mascara has ever made my lashes look so luscious without clumping them together.

Then I’m out on the town, frying eggs on the sidewalks, and running through fire hydrants to keep me cool, but I never leave home without my Caudalíe Beauty Elixer, which smells fantastic, tones my skin, cools me down, and keeps my makeup in place. One spritz on the overbearingly hot subway platform and I look as fresh as I did when I first applied my makeup. Armpit sweat stains not included in this assessment.

I ♥ Duane Reade

DrugStore1

The drug store is one of my favorite places on earth. Whether I’m going in to refill a prescription or buying a new batch of toilet paper, I inevitably walk out with a plastic bag full of extra unnecessary goodies. And it’s never a “quick trip”.  I can spend hours in Duane Reade, meandering through every aisle from lotions to bandaids, excited at the prospect of filling my medicine, beauty, and cleaning cabinets with more more more!

There’s something thrilling about testing new products, especially when they’re sold at moderate prices. I don’t think I’ve ever purchased the same toothbrush twice in a row (I like to change up the bristles and colors!), and discovering new cleaning products gets me as excited as the house wife I have yet to become.

Since I discuss a lot of my pricier beauty products on here, I thought I’d share with you some of my latest discoveries and staples that can be purchased at your closest Walgreens, Duane Reade, Rite Aid, CVS, and if you’re lucky, grocery store.

From left to right: Maybelline Baby Lips in Pink Punch, Cherry Me, & Grape Vine; Revlon lipstick in Sultry Sable, Wink For Pink, & Kiss Me Coral

I buy a significant amount of my lipstick from Duane Reade. My favorite brand is Revlon as I find it lasts the longest, has the largest variety of colors, and offers a number of different finishes from matte to shiny. I’ve also recently become obsessed with Maybelline “Baby Lips”. I have them in every color and find that they’re perfect for when I want something a bit more subtle. They also smell and taste good…

From left to right: L’Oreal Power Volume Mascara, Revlon Color Stay Eyeliner, Covergirl eyeshadow, Revlon eyeshadow

Even though DiorShow Mascara is my #1 go-to, I like to switch up brands every once in awhile. L’Oreal’s Power Volume Collagen mascara coats the lashes evenly while still giving a touch of clump for that extra full look. I’m still mastering the art of the cat eye, but have found the angular brush and dense color in Revlon’s Color Stay eyeliner to yield the best results. Now it’s all about steadying my hands. And while I’m not big on eyeshadow, I love the color variety in these CoverGirl and Revlon palettes.

From left to right: Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion, Garnier Moisturizing Gel, Aquaphor

The lotion aisle may be my biggest time waster, which is kind of silly since I really don’t moisturize my body enough. I’ve tried a number of different brands but Cetaphil remains the winner for least greasy application. I go through face lotion by the month and sometimes it’s just not worth spending a fortune on. So I alternate each month using either Dr. Jart’s Water Sure Gel from Sephora or Garnier’s Moisturizing Gel (they’re both ridiculously refreshing). I cannot praise Aquaphor enough. From nurturing my chapped lips to hydrating dry skin on the go, these tubes can be found in every single one of my handbags.

DrugStore_Remover

Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover, Almay Makeup Eraser Sticks

Since I wear mascara and eyeliner on a daily basis, finding a good eye makeup remover is crucial for the cleanliness of my white pillow cases. I use Dove Cold Cream for the initial removal and then follow up with Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover. I like to keep Almay Makeup Eraser Sticks with me for days when my liner or mascara get a little too smudgy.

DrugStore_Hygeine

Arm & Hammer Essentials Natural Deodorizer, Simple Soothing Facial Toner, Burt’s Bees Sugar Scrub

I used to use Dove’s deodorant religiously. But then my friend introduced me to a natural deodorizer that works as well as an antiperspirant and smells divine. Arm & Hammer’s Natural Deodorizer feels like butter when I put it on and lasts me throughout the day unlike many of the other natural deodorants I’ve tried. After washing my face at night, I like to use a light toner to wipe off any extra dirt or makeup. Simple’s Soothing Facial Toner is alcohol free and leaves my skin looking as refreshed as it could look at the end of the day. And lastly, I’m all for weekly exfoliation. Since I go through these pretty quickly, I try not to spend too much money on them. Burt’s Bees Honey & Shea Sugar Scrub is moderately priced, smells like candy, and does a heavy duty job on scrubbing away any excess skin.

Do you have any drug store favorites? If you do tell me so I can go waste some more time in my favorite store.

The Goop

Contrary to what you’re likely thinking, this post has absolutely nothing to do with Gwyneth Paltrow or Goop. It does however have to do with those of us who suffer from goopy eyes.

What are goopy eyes, you ask? Allow me to clarify, as I have suffered from them my entire life. Goopy eyes are the type of eyes that without fail cause your eye makeup to run halfway down your face making you either look like you’ve been crying, done some heroin, or that you’re wearing the same makeup you wore last night.

I can’t tell you how many times people have told me I look like a mess because my eye makeup is running; but here’s the thing: I’ve always been careful not to rub my eyes, I apply my eyeliner and mascara very neatly, and I take my makeup off every night. Needless to say, it’s not me, it’s the goop.

My friend texted me a while back telling me that she too suffers from “goopy eyes,” and I told her I was determined to find a solution. Well fellow goops, a solution I have found, and it comes in a little miracle bottle known as Laura Mercier Tight Line Activator.

With just a dollop of the activator on your hand followed by a dip of your liner brush, I can officially say that after one week of using this potion I haven’t suffered from a single smudge or droplet of liner or mascara!

There is a goop god.

end of day smudge and goop free!

Recently I’ve received a bunch of emails regarding my “beauty routine” and what my favorite products are, so I thought I’d do a giant post about the products I use and like. But before I get started let me just say that I know next-to-nothing about make-up and hair. Sure I play around with different looks and products but it’s really just a lot of trial and error until I find something that I like. That being said, I’m always on the lookout for product and technique suggestions, so if you have any “must-have” items or routines, please LET ME KNOW!

Here’s what’s currently occupying my shower, medicine cabinet, and make-up bag.

Hair:

I normally change up my shampoo and conditioner whenever I hit the pharmacy but there’s something about the combination of Aveeno Nourish + Volumize shampoo and Deva Curl One conditioner that has me buying it again and again. My hair has a tendency to get knotty really easily so I use Frederic Fekkai Technician Color Care Deep Conditioner once a week to add some extra moisture and shine. To keep my waves from getting too fluffy I use a combination of Redken Ringlet 07 and Joico Body Luxe mousse. Although mousse can often make hair crunchy, I find that this brand leaves my hair super soft while still keeping my waves intact.

Skin:

My skin is pretty normal so I like to combine both lightweight and heavy duty cleansers and moisturizers. In the morning I’m as basic as they come with Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser and Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer. At night I get a little more intense with Rodan + Fields Unblemish Acne Sulfer Wash and Jurlique Herbal Recovery Night Cream which is wonderfully light and leaves my skin feeling refreshed when I wake up in the morning.

Concealer:

I’m not big on concealer, but we all have those days of bad breakouts or dark under eye circles and that’s when the lovely Laura Mercier steps in. I am head-over-heels in love with both of these concealers; they smooth out the colors of my skin without looking like I’ve caked pounds of make-up on my face. All I need is a tiny drop to cover up a blemish, some dark-circles or unsightly redness. I use Secret Camoflauge under my eyes and the Silk Créme Foundation for everything else…although sometimes I combine the two.

Cheeks:

I use NARS Laguna Bronzer everyday. It adds just the right amount of shimmer and glow to my skin without looking like I painted my face orange. On days when I feel like doing a bit more I’ll use the Topshop Brighten stick on my cheek bones (and sometimes under the arch of my eyebrows) or Benetint to add a little rouge to the apples of my cheeks.

Eyes:

Now, this is an area of cosmetics I care a lot about. I hardly go a day without applying GloMinerals eyeliner in Espresso and using my Shu Uemura eyelash curler before applying DiorShow waterproof mascara. If you don’t own any GloMinerals eyeliner take my word for it when I say you had better buy some right away. I’ve tried a gazillion different kinds of eyeliner and none has stayed on so well without smudging or ending up all over my face than this one by GloMinerals. As I’ve said before I also really like doing cat eye make-up (see here) and find that L’Oreal Precise Liquid Liner is easy to put on and lasts all day. And while I’m not a huge fan of eyeshadow, NARS’s dual eyeshadow in Cardura adds a perfect golden shimmer of glamor to any look.

Lips:

I’ve been wearing lipstick since I was tall enough to reach into my Mom’s make-up drawer, but the one color that has stuck by my side for years upon years is Gipsy by NARS. It’s that perfect color of raspberry red that works both day and night. Lipstick has a tendency to make my lips chapped and dry so I always put on Revlon Moon Drops Lip Conditioner first. And to keep that moisture going I not only apply a thick coat of Aquaphor to my lips every night before bed but I also never leave home without a tube or tub in my bag. This stuff cures all. I also love Chanel Lèvres Scintallantes Glossimer in Rose Dilemma - don’t be fooled by its hot pink color, it’s actually a soft pink that looks dewy and natural when applied.

And that my friends, is a beauty WRAP!
