Blue Mint

Blue has never been a go-to color for me. I don’t have blue eyes, so there’s nothing to bring out there and my pale complexion has never really mixed well with the oceanic hue. But then I got this t-shirt from those stylish Olsen twins and figured, if I’m going to do this whole blue thing I might as well go monochromatic. So monochromatic I went.

I began with the aquatically blue StyleMint tie-dye shirt and styled it with my new favorite pair of blue jeans (an item of clothing I’ve been known to shy away from since I discovered my staple black skinnies). But I wasn’t impressed when I glanced in the mirror (which had nothing to do with the fact that I’m having a wretched hair day). I needed more blue in my look and my Mom’s blue tooth head piece wasn’t going to suffice. So, I reached into the back of my closet in San Francisco that has held the same archaic clothing since I went to college in 2004 and found this itsy bitsy baby boy vintage blue blazer. Shpadoinkle! My blue look was complete.

My Mom has always said that nothing gives her greater joy than to shower the people she loves in gifts, and as a result, my brothers and I are the same way. Don’t get me wrong, I love getting gifts (who doesn’t?) but I also have so much fun shopping for other people. Would Gillian wear that blouse? Would Sevan like that bracelet? Does Erin have this cookbook? These are the things that run through my mind every time I go shopping.

For the first installment of my holiday gift guides I’ve pulled together a number of gifts that I wouldn’t mind giving or receiving this Christmas. After all, the best gifts are one’s you wouldn’t mind keeping for yourself.

I never used to be much of a clutch person. Aside from my wallet being larger than most clutches, I was always afraid I would lose them, mindlessly leaving one on a table or in a bathroom. The other day however, I picked up this Stella & Dot clutch and now find myself looking for reasons to wear a clutch more often! I love it for it’s simplicity and versatility and of course, the buttery soft leather is perfection. Using a clutch has also made me reevaluate just how much I really need to carry around with me all day (i.e. is it really necessary that I carry FIVE chapsticks at the same time? I think not).

Now, here’s something even more exciting about this clutch - Stella & Dot would like to GIFT one of you darling readers this buttery soft gem that’s changed my handbag life. All you have to do is:

  1. Like Stella & Dot on Facebook
  2. Like Runway Hippie on Facebook
  3. Leave a comment here telling me your favorite Thanksgiving dish

I’ll announce the winner on Black Friday!

Whirling Dervish

May 9, 2011

I’m totally digging this new mid-calf length skirt trend. Don’t get me wrong, I still love me some minis, but it’s nice to be able to bend over in a skirt without the worry of flashing a little cheeky cheek. I tried this skirt on at Madewell last week but decided to think about it for a few days before buying it. But after an entire day of daydreaming about whirling and twirling in it, I scurried back over to Madewell a mere 24 hours later and wham bam thank you ma’am, it’s now mine forever and ever! I can already think of several different ways to wear this skirt, both day and night, and thus have zero regrets about my purchase. In fact, I think I’ll go put it on with a white t-shirt and some strappy sandals RIGHT THIS MINUTE! Aurevoir!

When I was little I was told that birthdays would become less and less exciting as the years went on. While part of this is true (I tend to not like the pressure of having to do something particularly special on the big day), I still enjoy the celebration aspect and obviously…the presents. I love all the colorful wrapping paper and the surprise that a simple brown box holds within its six walls.

With my birthday a little less than two weeks away, I’ve begun to make my birthday wish list. Whether these pieces are given to me from family and friends or as gifts that I give to myself is neither here nor there; after all, everyone should treat themselves to something on their special day, right? From cutesy kitchen appliances to silky shirts and sturdy boots, below are some of the treats I hope to unwrap on my upcoming birthday.

  1. Tucker Print Camisole - $176
  2. Tocca Candle - $36
  3. JCrew Plaid Boyfriend Cardigan - $88
  4. Peas Pass the Salt & Pepper Shakers - $22
  5. Fiorentini + Baker Buckle Boot - $545
  6. All Saints Poison Dress - $230
  7. A.L.C. Stripe Sweater with Leather Elbow Patches - $448
  8. Rope Knot Doorstop - $39
  9. Inside Out Serving Bowl - $24
  10. Zara Ankle Boot with Laces - $149
  11. Madewell Silk Cargo Shirt - $110
  12. Bottega Veneta Scarab Beetle Bangle - $390
