SummerHair

There are a few things that come to mind when I think about summer hair. Frizz, volume, waves, beach, envy. But there are certain products out there that can tackle all of the aforementioned issues except for envy, because most of us will just never have Gisele Bündchen’s naturally beachy hair. Accept and move forward.

Begininning with beach and waves, I present you with Bumble and bumble’s new Surf Shampoo and Conditioner. Though the idea of attaining dirty salt water hair with a shampoo and conditioner seems counterintuitive, I was pleasantly surprised with the duos result on my moppy locks. After one use I noticed a new buoyant and edgy texture in my hair that was certainly comparable to post salt-water tendrils. Unlike most shampoos and conditioners whose effect dies down by the end of the day, the oceany texture stayed with me until my head hit the pillow.

Now let’s address volume. Most volume is achieved with hairspray and mousse, both of which I am pro. But come summertime I want the volume to be as similar to Gisele’s voluminous locks as possible. I have been a long time fan of Bumble and bumble’s Surf Spray, which has been around for much longer than the aforementioned shampoo and conditioner. A couple of spritzes on both  sides of my head, some scrunching, and if you’re feeling bold, a quick run through with a curling iron and boom bam! your hair is a full inch or two fuller and also has a beachy texture.

Lastly, let’s discuss le frizz. Le evil frizz. I don’t know about you guys, but one percent of humidity and my hair is poof city. I may as well have stuck my hair in an electrical socket, which does tackle my desire for volume, but there is a big difference between volume and frizz. One is voluptuous, the other is like you’re taking hair cues from Bob Ross. After a few years of playing around with different de-frizz serums, most of which just made my hair look like the grease left on the wrapper of a McDonald’s Big Mac, I’ve happily settled on Bumble and bumble’s Brilliantine. A teeny tiny dollop (smaller than a penny), rubbed together in my palms and then smoothed over my hair (avoiding the roots!) and those frizzy fly aways are goners.

Before I leave you, let me touch on the fact that all of these products are by Bumble and bumble. This is by no means a sponsored post where you question my credibility. I just happen to think that when it comes to summer hair, Bumble and bumble knows best (they even have a surf kit!). Now go forth and channel Gisele.

Wear That Wall on Your Sleeve

As a newcomer to the world of gingham, polka dots, and pretty much any other hefty dose of printed fabrics (see yesterday’s post on the thought bubble skirt), I’ve now started looking everywhere thinking, “hm…could that make a cute skirt?”

I am also a relatively new addict to Pinterest, and find myself using it as a main source for procrastination and inspiration. Multiple times a day I click over to the picture-filled website, compiling mini libraries of scenic beaches, copy-worthy outfits and much to my surprise, wallpaper!  Though I usually find wallpaper to feel stuffy and obnoxious, lately these colorful rooms have been inspiring me in more ways than just interior design.  A blue and gold lobster blazer? Why not! Pink bamboo printed pencil skirt? Sign this sister up! A pleated silk chiffon dress decked out in toy cars? Abso-freakin-lutely!  I guess what I’m getting at here is that I am still drawn to the notion of looking to interior design for style inspiration, and that were I to ever have my own fashion line it would include more of your grandmother’s wallpaper than you could even possibly begin to imagine. But until that happens, let’s just take a moment to dream about these strips of wallpaper as a three-piece pantsuit with a clutch to match.

My new breakfast obsession: homemade blueberry banana cacao smoothies

I woke up this morning and I swear I could smell spring. Aside from the cliché of birds chirping (they were), there was a crispness in the air that had a hint of sweetness you could almost taste. Then of course I went outside with Finn and remembered that it’s still freezing and that I should have worn my puffer coat. But now that we’re over the hump of the worst two months of winter, I can really start to look forward to all the things to come. Like iced coffee. And barbecues. And frequent foot massages because my toes will finally be visible and will thus need constant pedicures! It’s the little things, you know?

And as far as this weekend goes, I plan to appreciate the little things that come with it like friends birthdays, mornings spent writing, and oysters for dinner tonight.

I have been sitting at my computer eating multiple bowls of Raisin Bran for the past 20 minutes trying to think of something to say about this outfit. Attempts at discussing my qualms with polka dots, need for color during the dark days of winter, and that the above photo kind of looks like I’m scratching my butt have all been made; but what’s really going on here is an outfit that came together when I was running late for a runway show last week.

That instantaneous panic moment when you realize that you have hit snooze 8 times too many and have about 30 minutes to turn your bedhead self into something remotely presentable for the outside world has me running around my apartment like a chicken with her head cut off. And while this situation usually forces me to reach for the classics (white blouse, black jeans, leather jacket, et al), there was something about that morning that told me to ignore my running late dead chicken routine. So instead I honed in on the colors that were speaking to me and how they matched up with multiple pieces in my closet. Tomato reds, navy blues, and woody browns came together to produce an outfit that a preppier Sonia would have worn in college had she not thought ripped t-shirts and smudgy eyeliner the end all be all of fashion. So what say you? Too preppy magoo for me to pull off or something I should emulate more often? Tell me all your thoughts.

What a fun week! Thank you all so much for your sweet birthday wishes! Last weekend my Mom and brother were in town visiting, which was a perfect kick off to a week filled with both my and my friend’s birthday, a photo shoot with Mr. StreetPeeper, some amazing spring market previews, and drinks with some of my favorite bloggers!

This weekend a group of 20+ friends and I are heading up to Connecticut to throw the ultimate Gatsby themed birthday party complete with 20s music, themed cocktails, and costumes from head to toe (Finn is wearing a bow tie for the occasion!). I promise to take lots of pictures, but make sure to follow me on Instagram too for of the moment updates!

Have a good weekend!
