Beauty Board - The Essentials

July 25, 2012

I recently got an email from a reader asking there were any new products added to my must-have items.  Seeing as how my last Beauty Board post was well over a year ago, you better believe I’ve introduced all kinds of new products into my routine! So much so that I’ve actually decided to divide this post up into two: the essentials and the subsidiaries.

Today I bring you the essentials, which are all listed below:

 Hair:

Bumble & Bumble Seaweed Shampoo | Aveda Color Conserve Conditioner | Moroccanoil Hydrating Cream |Frederic Fekkai Full Blown Volume Spray |Moroccanoil Hydrating Mask

I’m still a believer that your shampoo and conditioner don’t have to be by the same brand. I love the smell and freshness of Bumble and Bumble’s Seaweed Shampoo and how Aveda’s Color Conserve Conditioner not only leaves my hair super soft, but keeps me nice and blonde throughout each season! Moroccanoil is my BFF — this Hydrating Cream keeps my waves intact without giving them any of that icky crunch that comes from so many products. Sometimes I like to add a little more volume to my roots, so I spray a bit of Fekkai’s Full Blown Volume Spray onto them and then blast them with a hairdryer for a minute or so. And when I’ve spent too much time pooling around or think my locks could use an extra bit of love, I spend 10-15 minutes with Moroccanoil’s Hydrating Mask in my hair, which make it super shiny.

Skin:

Fresh Soy Face Cleanser | Clarisonic Mia | Fresh Soy Moisturizing Cream SPF 20 | Mario Badescu Drying Lotion | Neosporin | Mario Badescu Cucumber Tonic Mask

In the past year I’ve run into pimples, something that I’ve never really had a problem with. I think I’m finally starting to get them under control with Fresh’s Soy Face Cleanser and the Clarisonic Mia, which I use only at night. I’m a firm believer in lotion with sunblock and found that Fresh’s Soy Moisturizing Cream is not only light (aka doesn’t clog pores) but also has SPF 20. Win. When I do have an outbreak, I switch between using Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion one night and Neosporin the other. The last thing you want to do is dry out your skin so much that it has to make oils for itself. I also try to use Mario Badescu’s Cucumber Tonic Mask once a week (often when I’m using the aforementioned Moroccanoil Hydrating Mask — I look really pretty during these moments).

Concealer:

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer | Bare Escentuals Original Foundation | e.l.f. Under Eye Concealer & Highlighter | Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage

Concealer can be really gross. I hate when you see people with it so caked on to their face that if you drew a fingernail across their cheek you would pick up residue. Barf. Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer is a fantastic concealer as it’s extremely thin. I really only use it on my t-zone and then follow up with a bit of Bare Escentuals Original Foundation to even everything out. On occasion I will use e.l.f.’s Under Eye Concealer & Highlighter for days when the bags are too big to carry onboard and Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage for icky breakouts.

Lips:

Nars Bronzer in Laguna | Nars The Multiple Orgasm | Benefit Moon Beam | Nars Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Pale Gold

My cheek routine is pretty minimal. I’d say on a day-to-day basis I really only use Nars Bronzer, but sometimes it’s fun to jazz things up in which I use a smidge of Nars Orgasm cream blush. I’m always a fan of the tanned and dewy look, so if I’m going out at night or feel like trying something different, I’ll use Benefit’s Moon Beam and Nars Soft Touch Shadow Pencil on my cheek bones, the bridge of my nose and around my brow line. It’s supposed to be an eyeshadow pencil, but I have yet to use it as such.

Eyes:

gloMinerals gloCream in Espresso | Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler | DiorShow Mascara | Yves Saint Laurent Eyeliner

The eyes are the most important part of my makeup routine, and I have to say, not much has changed in terms of products. There isn’t a day that I don’t use gloMinerals gloCream eyeliner, you all know how much I love my Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler, and I always top things off with DiorShow mascara. Sometimes at night I’ll darken things up with a black eyeliner or cat eye look in which I use Yves Saint Laurent’s felt tip eyeliner.

Lips:

MAC Lipstick in Ruby Woo | Revlon ColorBurst Lip Gloss in Papaya | Lucas’ Papaw Ointment | Egyptian Magic Balm | Maybelline Baby Lips in Cherry

Oh, lips! You are so fun to decorate! Recently I’m all about the reds and rarely venture away from them. MAC’s Lipstick in Ruby Woo is my immediate go-to (it doesn’t smudge, goes on evenly, and immediately pumps up a look), but for something a little less dramatic I use Revlon’s ColorBurst Lip Gloss in Papaya, which still adds a solid amount of color but is less in your face. I’m a big lip balm addict and use Lucas’ Papaw Ointment all throughout the day (you can find it at one of my favorite NYC shops, 143 Ludlow) and Egyptian Magic right before I go to bed at night. For subtle color that still has some moisturizer in it, I use Maybelline’s Baby Lips in Cherry.

And that’s a beauty essentials wrap!

My two biggest beauty icons - Jane Birkin and Brigitte Bardot - have two entirely different looks and yet they both managed to attract the same man, Serge Gainsbourg.

What does it mean!?

To avoid any sort of Freudian rants, I’m just going to cut out the psychological part of this post and get straight to the beauty inspiration.

Let’s start with Mademoiselle Birkin.

Ah, natural and effortless beauty at it’s finest. Wearing next to no makeup, Jane Birkin always managed to look like a doe eyed flower child, and I’m pretty sure she traveled around with her own personal sun ray machine — seriously, is there ever a picture of her not glowing?

Her look is my go-to for lazy Sundays (when I’m not hungover) and my everyday routine once I’ve got a solid summer tan going on. To replicate her look I use a bit of Benefit’s Moon Beam on my cheekbones, the corners of my eyes and a bit on the bridge of my nose. I then put mascara (I like DiorShow) onto my lashes and give them a good comb through once its applied. After that I do a quick shaping of my brows, put a smidge of Rosebud Salve on my lips and run a little of Bumble and Bumble’s Brilliantine through my hair for shine. This is definitely more of a daytime look, but it really never fails.

Now onto my favorite vixen, Brigitte Bardot.

You may remember my little hommage to Brigitte last summer where I replicated her signature cat-eye makeup, voluminous updo and exaggerated pout. As I said then, her look is not one for everyday wear, but I love breaking it out for dressed up dinners, events, and nights out on the town.

It’s all about “more is more” when it comes to replicating the Bardot look. I always make sure to line my eyes multiple times with a jetblack eyeliner (I like MAC’s Liquid Liner for cat eyes and Estee Lauder’s Pure Color Intense Kajal Eye Crayon for everything else) before applying a ridiculous amount of MAC’s Haute & Naughty Mascara. After that I make sure to apply some shimmer to my cheekbones with NARS Illuminator  and color to my lips - this can range from the brightest red in my cosmetics case to a subtle pink gloss. Then I add some oomph to my hair  by teasing my roots with Fekkai’s Coiff Spray. Et voila! Maintenant attendre Monsieur Gainsbourg!

Who are your beauty icons?

Recently I’ve received a bunch of emails regarding my “beauty routine” and what my favorite products are, so I thought I’d do a giant post about the products I use and like. But before I get started let me just say that I know next-to-nothing about make-up and hair. Sure I play around with different looks and products but it’s really just a lot of trial and error until I find something that I like. That being said, I’m always on the lookout for product and technique suggestions, so if you have any “must-have” items or routines, please LET ME KNOW!

Here’s what’s currently occupying my shower, medicine cabinet, and make-up bag.

Hair:

I normally change up my shampoo and conditioner whenever I hit the pharmacy but there’s something about the combination of Aveeno Nourish + Volumize shampoo and Deva Curl One conditioner that has me buying it again and again. My hair has a tendency to get knotty really easily so I use Frederic Fekkai Technician Color Care Deep Conditioner once a week to add some extra moisture and shine. To keep my waves from getting too fluffy I use a combination of Redken Ringlet 07 and Joico Body Luxe mousse. Although mousse can often make hair crunchy, I find that this brand leaves my hair super soft while still keeping my waves intact.

Skin:

My skin is pretty normal so I like to combine both lightweight and heavy duty cleansers and moisturizers. In the morning I’m as basic as they come with Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser and Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer. At night I get a little more intense with Rodan + Fields Unblemish Acne Sulfer Wash and Jurlique Herbal Recovery Night Cream which is wonderfully light and leaves my skin feeling refreshed when I wake up in the morning.

Concealer:

I’m not big on concealer, but we all have those days of bad breakouts or dark under eye circles and that’s when the lovely Laura Mercier steps in. I am head-over-heels in love with both of these concealers; they smooth out the colors of my skin without looking like I’ve caked pounds of make-up on my face. All I need is a tiny drop to cover up a blemish, some dark-circles or unsightly redness. I use Secret Camoflauge under my eyes and the Silk Créme Foundation for everything else…although sometimes I combine the two.

Cheeks:

I use NARS Laguna Bronzer everyday. It adds just the right amount of shimmer and glow to my skin without looking like I painted my face orange. On days when I feel like doing a bit more I’ll use the Topshop Brighten stick on my cheek bones (and sometimes under the arch of my eyebrows) or Benetint to add a little rouge to the apples of my cheeks.

Eyes:

Now, this is an area of cosmetics I care a lot about. I hardly go a day without applying GloMinerals eyeliner in Espresso and using my Shu Uemura eyelash curler before applying DiorShow waterproof mascara. If you don’t own any GloMinerals eyeliner take my word for it when I say you had better buy some right away. I’ve tried a gazillion different kinds of eyeliner and none has stayed on so well without smudging or ending up all over my face than this one by GloMinerals. As I’ve said before I also really like doing cat eye make-up (see here) and find that L’Oreal Precise Liquid Liner is easy to put on and lasts all day. And while I’m not a huge fan of eyeshadow, NARS’s dual eyeshadow in Cardura adds a perfect golden shimmer of glamor to any look.

Lips:

I’ve been wearing lipstick since I was tall enough to reach into my Mom’s make-up drawer, but the one color that has stuck by my side for years upon years is Gipsy by NARS. It’s that perfect color of raspberry red that works both day and night. Lipstick has a tendency to make my lips chapped and dry so I always put on Revlon Moon Drops Lip Conditioner first. And to keep that moisture going I not only apply a thick coat of Aquaphor to my lips every night before bed but I also never leave home without a tube or tub in my bag. This stuff cures all. I also love Chanel Lèvres Scintallantes Glossimer in Rose Dilemma - don’t be fooled by its hot pink color, it’s actually a soft pink that looks dewy and natural when applied.

And that my friends, is a beauty WRAP!

The Couture shows this year we absolutely divine, I mean when are they not!? Each collection was complete and utter eye candy - between Elie Saab’s ethereal gowns reminiscent of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Armani Privé’s form fitting celestial designs, each designer created a collection that was not only entirely different than any other, but collections that showed their artistic eye and exceptional craftsmanship.

Below I have selected my favorite looks from my favorite designers. I can already see Elie Saab, Armani and Givenchy taking over the Academy Award’s red carpet.

What are your favorites??

Also, just click on the photos to enlarge them. Sorry they’re so small but I wanted to fit as many looks as possible in one line! :)
